The
Late Archbishop Adrian Mung’andu.
Former
Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Rev Adrian Mung’andu who died Monday
night of 25th June 2007 at Mina Medical Centre, Roma in
Lusaka Township will be put to rest on Thursday 28th June
2007. The requiem Mass will be held on Thursday 0900 hrs at the
Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka.
The late
Archbishop, Most Rev Adrian Mung’andu, was born at Kasisi, Lusaka,
about 1923. He received his primary education at Kasisi and his
Secondary education at Chikuni in the Southern Province, where he
also qualified as a teacher. He held a Diploma in Social Science
and a Pastoral course from London in the UK and Kansas City in the
U.S, respectively.
In 1943 he
entered the major Seminary at Chishawasha in Zimbabwe to study for
the priesthood. He was ordained priest on October 29, 1950. Having
been assistant parish priest at kasisi and at Karenda (near Mumbwa),
he later held the office of Principal of the then Kasisi Boys’
School. Afterwards, he became parish priest of Chilenje Catholic
Church, now known as St. Charles Lwanga.
In 1963 he
was made Vicar- General of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, an office he
held until 1969.
In 1972, he
was appointed to work in Livingstone at Maramba Catholic Parish.
Pope Paul VI appointed the late Archbishop Mung’andu as Bishop of
Livingstone in 1975. He was later transferred to Lusaka Archdiocese
and elevated as an Archbishop in 1984, a position he held until his
retirement in 1996. He spoke more than five Zambian languages. He
will be missed by the Catholic faithful.
