Multi Facility Economic Zones (MFEZ) are zones/areas
that the government through the Ministry of Finance and
National Planning designate as geographical area for
industry and trade purposes. These areas have economic
laws that are more liberal than a country's typical
economic laws that is the enjoy tax incentives and tax
rebates. These are deemed foreign territories for the
purpose of trade operations, duties and tariffs.
Purpose of these Zones:
vPromotion of exports of goods and
services.
! Promotion of investment from domestic
and foreign sources.
! Creation of employment
! Development of infrastructure facilities.
! Generation of additional economic
activity.
Currently, China is the leading player in the MFEZ
establishment. The Chinese goverment have made
promises of investing $800/900 million in the new MFEZ
in Chambishi, the first such zone to be established in
Africa. The zone is expected to attract both Chinese and
Zambian investors and generate thousands of jobs. In
addition to the investment the Chinese government has
other incentives to Zambia which include cancellation of
debt; providing loans for road construction equipment;
building a large sports stadium in Ndola; establishing an
agricultural technology centre,
